Chinese Theatre - Contemporary Jingju
Jingju (Beijing Opera) is one of the most famous and recognizable forms of traditional Chinese Theatre.
My research focuses on contemporary jingju, specifically on jingju adaptations of Western literature. I engage with jingju adaptation translation, adaptation and intercultural theories all to play with the idea of jingju as form of soft diplomacy.
Trauma-Informed and Culturally Relevant Dramaturgies
I have been researching and working through a new form of research methodology to expand the definition of dramaturgy to include trauma-informed care and culturally relevant and responsive teaching and how these methodologies can engage and inform dramaturgical analysis in both Western and Eastern theatre forms. In educational theatre, we understand that trauma-informed and culturally responsive research methods are vital to presenting a valid and truthful image of the community that surrounds, especially when those communities are underrepresented, however what has not been explored is how trauma informed and culturally relevant methodologies can actually help theatre practitioners to establish a line of research that is anti-racist and not limited to Predominately White research.
